In December 2006 at the MLA Convention in Philadelphia, the Division for Late-Eighteenth-Century English Literature experimented with a new type of session. Breaking from the traditional papers-and-responses format, they envisioned a ninety-minute "interrogation" of a groundbreaking new book in the field that would feature prepared questions by two "interrogators," a response from the book's author, and a large block of time for audience participation. The challenge, of course, in an era when each year heralds dozens of new titles on eighteenth- and nineteenth-century British literature and culture, was finding a single recent monograph with which a significant number of convention-goers would be sufficiently familiar. In William St. Clair's monumental study The Reading Nation in the Romantic Period, the session organizers found the ideal book, a fact evidenced not only by the large crowd at the session but also by the energetic, wide-ranging discussion that took place. That so many audience members could engage with this still rather new, unusually long and expensive tome is testament to the immediate impact of a book that might very well be the new century's most important contribution to Romantic-era studies.
